Bute Rule Update, Claiming Crown Regular Nomination Deadline Today

Update on Proposed Change to RCI Model Rule for Bute

To follow up on our post from earlier this week regarding the change the RMTC Scientific Advisory Council proposed to the RCI Model Rules Committee regarding phenylbutazone (bute), the National HBPA asked that any vote on whether or not to adopt the proposed rule change be postponed until such time as all parties involved had time to further explore the issue and the possible impact of such a change. The RCI Model Rules Committee agreed to a postponement until its next meeting on July 22nd.

The proposed change to the bute rule would keep the cutoff time to administer bute at 24 hours before a race and change the permissible threshold from 5 mcg./ml. to 2 mcg./ml. The regulatory veterinarians had originally proposed an even more drastic revision to the rule - wanting to change the cutoff time to 48 hours prior to a race and change the permissible threshold to 1 mcg./ml..

Today Is Early Nomination Deadline for 2010 Claiming Crown!

Today, April 16th, is the last day you can nominate your horses for the 2010 Claiming Crown at Canterbury Park for just $100 for a regular nomination and $250 for an open nomination (if you purchase an open nomination, you have until June 11th to identify the horse for which you would like to use the nomination, providing you great flexibility).

Horses can still be nominated through April 11th, with the cost to nominate between April 17th and June 11th being $500. Supplemental nominations will be accepted from June 12th through July 9th for a cost of five percent (5%) of the race to which the horse is being supplemented.

Canterbury Park will host the 12th running of the Claiming Crown on Saturday, July 24, 2010. Patterned after the Breeders’ Cup, Claiming Crown was designed to reward Thoroughbred racing’s “blue-collar” horses and will offer six races at varying distances on both dirt and turf with purses totaling $500,000.
